Wear your Intention, Meditation Shawls

Wear your Intention, Meditation Shawls

Meditation Shawls have been used for thousands of years by many cultures and religions. They are also called prayer shawls depending on the religion or custom of the persons wearing them. The historical intent was for the shawls to surround a person during meditation or prayer and hold the energy that gathers as a person falls deeply into their practice. Meditation shawls are also of particular significance in healing rituals as well as ceremonial events. If your meditation practice is at night or in the morning the temperature of a room or outdoor space may be cool. The body may also have a tendency to cool down as a person meditates or prays so some extra warmth can help the body during this time.  Helping to keep a constant temperature that is comfortable may also prevent the distractions that can take us out of meditation.

It is said that the meditation shawl will keep the energies of the meditator. Therefore wearing it consistently during meditation practice is beneficial. Objects have remembrance and certainly contain a vibe and I can tell you that my own meditation shawl is becoming more and more an object that is significant to my practice. I have to say that when I first started daily practice I did not think much of it.  I had it folded or kept it around, but now I use it at the very least when I am home and practice meditation. It serves as a way for me to stay a little warmer in my drafty house but also feels good as it surrounds me in practice and holds my energy. It is now part of my rituals to start my meditation wrapping myself in this natural 100% jute cloth made in India. It is a beautiful orange color and contains images of Goddess Durga with the Mantra: Om Shri Durgaya Namaha in decorative Sanskrit text. Since Durga is a protector of all that is good and harmonious in the world this is the perfect Mantra and Goddess for my intention. Oh, and since meditation shawls keep your meditative energies it is of said importance to keep them in a "sacred" place when not in use!

I also want to point out that shawls are not just a great item for meditating but to lie on, decorate with, to make a great turban, skirt, or to enhance your yogi fashion in any way possible.

Yama Yoga Store has a few beautiful colors and styles made of 100% Jute. The Shawls are handprinted in India and feature designs like the OM Mantra or Shiva, Parvati, and Ganesh. They are a large 44” x 87”.

So, Wrap your body in that and feel the energy!

Feel your best going into the months ahead with a new meditation practice that includes a prayer shawl!
