Yoga Enriches Women’s Sexual Health

Yoga Enriches Women’s Sexual Health

I received a question from a subscriber asking about sex and Yoga. The 30-year-old woman simply asked whether or not Yoga was a good way to improve her sexual health. I think it is a subject that seems slightly taboo in some circles but the overall idea here is to make sure people are aware of how yoga along with meditation and pranayama breathing practices can enhance all facets of your life including sexual health. For women, sexual health can be an issue and frustrating to resolve if stressors go unchecked. Our bodies were made to shut down a bit in times of stress, so muscles get tight and overall desire is lost. These concerns are exacerbated after 40 when our bodies start to change.

There have been a number of studies (although a small number) that describe regular Yoga Asana (3-5 days per week or more with around 40 - 60 minutes per day) as pivotal for loosening the pelvic area, giving a person deep control over their body and relaxing the mind. These three fundamentals found in Yoga practice are known for enhancing the overall sexual experience. One study talks about the conditional side-effect that Yoga brings to us and that is stress reduction and how stress reduction is the way to positive women’s health concerning desire, natural lubrication (even in older women) and overall satisfaction.

If you are starting to have problems arise in the body like pain from tight hips and joint pain I would advise using a general regular practice that incorporates Yoga Postures that address the pelvic area specifically. There are Asanas that improve the pelvic area in terms of flexibility and muscle tone in a progressive way, over time that releases tight hips. Yin Yoga, using supportive bolsters cushions and straps can help you ease into the postures and gain ground every time you practice.

The following 5 Postures are great for procuring flexible and stable muscles surrounding the pelvis:

  • Bridge Pose

  • Cat-Cow

  • Garland Pose

  • Staff Pose

  • Seated Forward Bend

The following 5 postures are for procuring flexible and stable hip joints and muscles:

  • Childs Pose

  • Half Lord of the Fishes Pose

  • Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend

  • Reclining Cobblers Pose or Reclining Bound Angle Pose

  • Wide-Legged Forward Bend

If you are busy and feel you do not have the time for meditation try to cut out 2 or 3-minute intervals to ease any stress that arises during the day. Incorporate Pranayama or Yogi Breathes as you sit at your desk. Take time out to do the asanas. Finding peace, joy and less stress is always a result of Yoga practices but doing regular Yoga practices can enhance areas of your life you may have not expected. Sexual Health is one of them.
